Mary Painter was one of the founders of the Rainbow Cottages. In 1887, nine young women from wealthy families came together, calling themselves the Rainbow Circle of King’s Daughters, they discussed how they could help poor children in Cleveland. The idea of the Rainbow Circle was to provide a place for sick children to convalesce. The young women began making plans and raising money through charity balls and bed subscriptions. The Rainbow Cottages was finally opened in 1891, where Mary was one of the most active workers, many children were saved through her time, effort and money which she gave freely .
