He died suddenly while working at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company's works at Fairfield, where he was a stoker; he had just finished firing the furnaces when he staggered back and fell over a heap of coal, dead. He was buried on 3 June at Ashburton Cemetery, in a Wesleyan plot (he was Salvation Army), area 119, plot 29; his wife was buried in the same plot in 1952.
