Samuel Ching was born in December 1840, in Plymouth, Devon, England, the son of James Ching and Betsy Tout Milton, with hisbirth being registered in the 4th Quarter at Plymouth.[1]
On the 6th June 1841, the 6-month-old Samuel was living in the Truran household, on William Street, Plymouth, with his family. Those in residence at the time were his father: James, a minister; his mother: Betsy; his older brother: 3-year-old James; the Truran family: Devon-born James; his wife, Devon-born Sarah née Edwards; their daughter: 1-year-old Plymouth-born Frances Elizabeth; William, a painter, and Catherine Foale, both Devon-born; the Roberts family: Stephen, a carpenter; his wife: Jane née Mortimer; and their children: 13-year-old Mary Ann; 11-year-old John; 7-year-old Stephen; and 1-year-old Helen; Mary Glennen (abt 86), living on own means; Louisa Kellock, also living on own means; Betsy Kellock (too old to be Louisa's daughter); and Elizabeth Harris, servant. All, from Mary Glennen to Elizabeth Harris, born elsewhere than Devon.[2]
On the 30th March 1851, the 10-year-old Samuel, a scholar, was living on Long Sutton Road, Somerton, Somerset. Home at the time were his father: James (48), a Bible Christian Minister; and his mother: Betsy (51).[3]
On the 7th April 1861, Samuel (20), a teacher of music and singing, was living at 5 Hebron Place, Bedminster, Somerset. Also in residence at the time were his father: James (58), a visiting minister of religion; and his mother: Elizabeth (61).[4]
On the 13th October 1862, in St Saviour, Jersey, Channel Isles, 21-year-old Samuel, a Professor of Music, and 24-year-old Elizabeth Mutton were married in conformity with the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by special license. The officiant was William Corlest le Bretin, Rector. Both bride and groom, and both witnesses, signed their names. Samuel's father is noted as James Ching, minister; and Elizabeth's father is given as William Mutton, farmer.[5] They were to have four known children, three daughters, and a son:
On the 2nd April 1871, the Ching family, residents of Saint Helier's Church, St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, consisted of Samuel (30), a commercial clerk; Elizabeth (31); Samuel James (3), and Annie (1).[6]
On the 3rd April 1881, Samuel Ching (40), Superintendent of Agencies for Liberator Building Society (Officer of), was living with his family at 20 Mill Street, Bideford, Devon. Those home at the time were his wife: Elizabeth (43); and their daughters: 2-year-old Mabel, and 4-month-old Gertrude.[7] Young Samuel James, aged 13 years, was off to boarding school, in Shebbear, Devon, where he was listed as a scholar.
On the 5th April 1891, Samuel (50), Superintendent of Agencies for Liberator Building Society (Officer of), was living at 2 Canterbury Road, Croydon, Surrey. Home at the time were his wife: Elizabeth (52); and their children: Samuel (23), a clerk in Secretary's Office, GPO second division; Annie (21); Mable (12); and Gertrude (10); and Ethel S Corodray (21), general domestic.[8]
Samuel Ching passed away on the 23rd November 1909, in Thornton Heath, Surrey, England, aged 69 years, with his death being registered in the 4th Quarter at Croydon.[9]
In his Will, probate of which was granted on the 29th December 1909 to Samuel James Ching civil servant, Samuel left effects to the value of £1252 1s 10d.[10]
