Stephen N. Chilton was born at Alburg, VT, son of George Chilton and Desire (Deziah) Niles. He was a farmer, living at Ellenburg Corners, NY. His gravestone lists his year of birth as 1839, but he was likely born 1835-1836 (per census data). He has often been mistaken for his first cousin, Stephen Niles Chilton (son of James Chilton and Diana Niles), who was born at Alburg, VT, July 20, 1839 and died at Detroit, MI, May 9, 1906 (his DOB/DOD and parents have been proven through pension documents.

CHILTON, STEPHEN N.—Age, 23 years. Enrolled, August 8, 1862, at Potsdam, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. E, August 27, 1862; promoted first sergeant, January 9, 1861; mustered in as first lieutenant, January 16, 1865; mustered out, July 27, 1865, near Washington, D. C. Commissioned first lieutenant, February 18, 1865, with rank from January 16, 1865, vice T. Shaw, promoted.[1]
