Biography

(--?--) Cheng was born circa 12 Dec. 1880 at Oo Seack (Hu Shak), China. She was also known as Kun Chang. She immigrated circa 1890 to Hawaii.^{[1] [2][3]}

She married Hin Chiu Lum, son of Tuck Hoy Lum and (--?--) Chang, in 1896 at Honolulu.^[1] As of 1896, she was also known as Chang Shee Lum. In English this means a married woman whose father's name was Chang and whose husband's name is Lum. Shee can be translated as Mrs., that is why there are thousands of census records with Chinese women that have a first name of Shee or She.

She and her husband, Hin Chiu Lum, appeared on the census of 9 June 1900 at Hamakua, Hawaii, Hawaii Territory, their eldest son, Yau was with them, he was almost three years old.^[4] She sailed on the SS Siberia from Honolulu HI to China about the 29th of March 1904. Her three children, Yau, Chow and Tim were with her. Yau and Chow, the boys returned to Hawaii, Tim, the girl remained in China^[1] where she married a man with the last name of Cheng. Tim died about 1969 in China. ^[2]

While Chang Shee Lum was living at Tai Po, her husband remained in Hawaii working as a farmer. She lived between April 1904 and 1939 at Tai Po (Dai Poo) Village, China. As of 18 Sep. 1916, she was also known as She Chang. She lived between 1939 and 1946 in Hawaii.^[1] She appeared on the census of 13 April 1940 in the household of her son, Yau Lum and daughter-in-law, Sin Chang at Honolulu, Hawaii Territory.^[3] She lived between 29 Sep. 1948 and Oct. 1951 at Tai Po, China and died there on the Chinese calendar date of 16 Sep. 1955.^[2]
