William was born in 1765 to Ebenezer ansd Priscilla (Lyon) Cheney. William served in 1781 as private in Captain James Dana's company, Colonel Samuel Wylly's regiment, Connecticut Line. He was the drummer boy. He was placed on the pension roll of Ontario County, New York in 1832
