Biography

Herman Chayes has Jewish Roots.

Herman Chayes migrated from the Russian Empire to United States.

Hyman, son of Yakov Chayes, was born November 10, 1867 somewhere in the Russian Empire. He migrated to the United States sometime in the mid 1880s. He married Betty Shmuchler around that time and they had at least five children together, all born in New York City, before the turn of the century. At some point the family moved to Bayonne in Hudson County, New Jersey where became a naturalized citizen of the United States and he began using the Anglicized version of his name "Herman." There are consistent census records for Herman, Betty, and his five children in Bayonne through 1920.^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

Then there is some uncertainty in Herman's life story. He is not found in the 1930 census and at some point between 1920 and 1935 Betty may have passed away. Herman married his second wife, Chaje Etel (née Schleifer) Braumzweig, who went by "Emily" in English, in 1935 in New Jersey.^[6][7] In the 1940 census, he is living with Emily in Bayonne and one of her children from her previous marriage, Nathan.^[8] Herman died (age 76) on September 27, 1944 in New York City, Bronx, New York and was buried the next day in Baron Hirsch Cemetery on Staten Island.^[9][10]

• Herman's FamilySearch profile ID is LTBP-YP8.
• The identity of his mother is undetermined. Some records name a woman called Anna Gold but there is reason to believe she may possibly be the father's second wife. More research is needed.
• It is unknown if Betty and he married before or after their migration from Europe to the United States. The date of her death is unknown. She is alive in the 1920 census and he remarries in 1935.
• Immigration and naturalization records need to be found. There are different years provided in different records but their son Bernard was born in New York City in 1888 so they had to have migrated before then. The 1900 census reports that he was already naturalized by that time.
• He has not been found in the 1930 census. He should be in Bayonne, Hudson, New Jersey.
• Profiles still need to be created for some of Herman and Betty's children, as well as Herman's second wife Emily.
