In 1851, James and Maria were living in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Canada West[3], with their three sons, Thomas C.T.H., James Robert, and William Charles.
In 1861, James and Maria were living in St. Vincent Township[4] with their seven sons: Thomas, James, William, John, Edward, Francis, and Albert.
In the 1880 Atlas of St. Vincent Township, James was noted to be living at Lot 11, Concession 4[5]. It was noted that he had been born in County Cavan, although his year of birth was incorrectly recorded as 1838[6]. He settled his land in 1846. His post office was Meaford.
In 1891, James, widowed, was living at home[7]. Francis, 31, single, lived at home as well.
In 1901, James, widowed, was living at home in St. Vincent[8]. His son Francis was living with him, while Thomas and his family were next door.
James died on June 12, 1910[9] at Lot 11, Concession 4, in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, Ontario. His death record states he was born on May 20, 1820, the son of John Charters and his wife, whose maiden name was Kenny. The informant on the record was W. C. Charters, of Epping, Ontario, which was located in Euphrasia Township, Grey County. Euphrasia Township was just south of St. Vincent Township.
