Biography

Edward was born in 1856 at his parents' farm "Springbank", now known as Rangiora, Canterbury. He was the son of Robert and Sarah Chapman.

When his father divided the Springbank property before his death, Edward's share included the original homestead, where he lived for practically his whole life.

Edward married Mary Barbara Harriet Gray on 24 March 1885. Their son John was born in 1890.

He was a member of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and was its president in 1891. He also assisted the Roads Board, was a Lieutenant of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, a member and for some time chairman of the North Canterbury Sheep-farmers' Association, and a supporter of the Church of England.

In the last few years of his life, he was working on a water supply scheme for the plains between the Ashley and Waimakariri rivers. He was elected a member of the Water Supply Board.

He passed away on 21 April 1893 at the age of 37, after being accidentally shot while hunting wild cattle in the back country. He was survived by his wife and 2 sons.
