Biography

James Robert Cazort, born on February 26, 1849, in Hurdle Mills, Person County, North Carolina, was the son of Sidney Bumpass Cazort and Martha Harrell (Wallace) Cazort. His early life was spent in Pittsburg Township, Johnson County, Arkansas, as evidenced by census records in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. In 1880, he owned and operated a dry goods store in Pittsburg Township.

By 1900, James had moved to Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas, where he was engaged in the mercantile trade as a merchant. His diverse business interests extended to land, lumber, livestock, and cotton, making the Cazort Brothers' family business a virtual empire that operated not only in Arkansas but also into neighboring states.

Returning to Pittsburg in 1910, James continued his career as a retail merchandiser. In subsequent years, he resided in Pittsburg in 1920 and in Lamar in 1930. At the age of 86, after a prolonged illness, James Robert Cazort passed away on May 12, 1935, at his home in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. Notably, his son William, who would later become Lieutenant Governor, was by his side during this period.

James Robert Cazort's legacy extends beyond his personal achievements; his role as a businessman with wide-ranging interests contributed to the success of the Cazort Brothers' enterprise, which operated as a virtual empire throughout Arkansas and neighboring states. His final resting place is the Cazort Cemetery in Lamar, Johnson County, Arkansas.
