Biography

Arthur was the son of William Cayley and Mary Holbech.[1][2] He was baptised at All Saints, Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 13 February 1653/4.[3][4]

Arthur entered Gray's Inn, London on 12 June 1674.[1][5] He was an alderman of Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1684.[6]

On 28 May 1699 Arthur married Everilda Thornhill.[1] The licence for their marriage gives the marriage place as Overton, Yorkshire and her age as 19.[7] Clay's edition of Dugdale's Yorkshire Visitation states that they married at Overton.[2] They had four children:

  • William,[2] baptised at St Michael le Belfrey, York on 12 May 1700.[8][9]
  • Mary,[2] baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 18 March 1704.[10]
  • George,[1][2] baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 4 September 1707.[11]
  • Arthur,[2] baptised at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 29 May 1710.[12]

In 1708 Arthur inherited the Cayley baronetcy on the death of his father.[1]

Arthur died on 19 May 1727.[1][2] He was buried at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 21 May 1727.[13]
