George Catterall was born in Lancashire, England.

George was born in 1892. [1] He was the son of Charles Catterall and Caroline Wilcockson, and was christened on 14 February 1892 at St James the Apostle, Bolton. The family are living in Grasmere Street at this time and his father works as a Minder in a Cotton Mill. [2]

1901 Census: 38 Waterloo Street, Little Bolton. George is 9. He has 4 sisters, Elizabeth 14 working as a Cotton Quilt Knotter, Annie 11 Bessie 6 and Mary 4. He also has a brother Charles 3. Father Charles 38 is a Cotton Spinner and mother Caroline is 40. [3]
1911 Census: 59 Beech Street, Astley Bridge, Bolton. George 19 is a Card Frame Tenter in a Cotton Mill. Siblings, Elizabeth 24, Ann 21, Bessie 15, Mary 14, and Charles 13, all doing various jobs in the Cotton Mill. Father Charles 48, also a Cotton Spinner and mother Caroline is 50. [4]

WW1: George was in the Royal Navy during WW1 as a Royal Navy Auxilliary Sick Berth Reserve. From August to December 1914 he was at the Haslar Hospital in Gosport, likely training for his role, and after that briefly joined the ship Victory before he joined HMS Changuinola an armed Merchant Cruiser. [5]
It is noted on the record that he was commended for his efforts to save life and alleviate suffering on the occasion of the explosion at Halifax (NS) on 6 December 1917 and uprated to SBS (Sick Berth Staff). This was regarding an explosion in the harbour of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada when a French Cargo Ship SS Mont-Blanc carrying high explosives collided with a Norwegian vessel SS Imo. It is estimated about 2000 people died and 9000 injured in the Richmond district of Halifax. [6][7]

Marriage The marriage by banns of George Frederick Catterall and Rose Ann Caraher took place on 21 February 1920 at St. James, Bolton. George was a bachelor of 28 and worked as a Stripper (in a Cotton Mill). Rose was a spinster age 30, working as a Weaver. They were both living at 65 Blackbank Street. Father of the bride was named as William Henry Caraher (deceased). Witnesses were Thomas Worsley and Mary Jane Catterall. The ceremony was performed by Arthur W Nye, vicar. [8] [9][10]
1939 Register : 4, Larchwood Street, Bolton. George is about 47 and working as a Stripper and Grinder in a Cotton Mill. Rose Ann is about 50 and looking after the home. [11]
He passed away about 1955. [12]
