Biography

Ezekiel was a Friend (Quaker)

Ezekiel was born about 1619, being baptised at Littleport, Cambridgeshire on 12 Mar 1619. He is the son of William Cater and Katherine (Unknown) Cater^[1]

He married firstly on 21 Sep 1640, at Littleport, Cambridgshire Susan Chamberlaine. ^[2]

About 1655, Ezekiel's brother Samuel, who had previously served as an elder in the baptist church at Littleport, Cambridgeshire, was converted to the Quaker religion by James Parnell (later himself an influential Quaker preacher, author and martyr). Ezekiel seems to have converted at a similar time. In consequence, both Ezekiel and Samuel were excommunicated from the baptist church in May 1655. ^[3]

His wife Susan died in 1671, her burial as Ann wife of Ezekiel Catter on 18 Mar 1671/72 being noted in the register book of the Littleport, Cambridgshire Quakers. ^[4]

He married secondly on 9th Dec 1677 Mary, a widow, previously wife of Robert Hobbs of Burwell, at the Quaker meeting house at Littleport, Cambridgeshire. ^[5]

Ezekiel died in 1680, his burial on 4 Dec 1680 being noted in the register book of the Littleport, Cambridgeshire Quakers. ^[6]

Extract reads: "Like Bunyam, Holcraft and Oddy engaged in controversy with the Quakers, particularly Samuel Cater (1627 - 1711), a carpenter from Littleport, near Ely. Cater had been a baptist, serving as an elder in the Littleport baptist church (which was associated with Henry Denne, one of Bunyen's friends) by 1655. After James Parnell converted Cater to Quaker tenets, the Baptists excommunicated Samuel and his brother Ezekiel in May 1655."
