The parish of St. Francis Xavier, established on the Southeast corner of Pine and St. Tammany Streets in Madisonville in 1841, was the first Catholic parish on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Initially a priest from the Cathedral in New Orleans crossed the lake in a skiff for masses. After the establishment of St. Peter’s in Covington, the priest assigned there served both parishes. When the Benedictine Monks of St. Joseph Abbey moved from Gessen (near Rosaryville) to St. Benedict in the 1880’s, a priest from the abbey was sent to serve St. Francis Xavier. Early in the twentieth century a second Catholic Church, St. Catherine of Alexandria was constructed on the northeast corner of Pine and St. Mary Streets of Madisonville with the intent that it would serve primarily the white population. Bedico Catholic Church was also established about 5 miles outside Madisonville. Between 1960 and 1965, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church was closed and the congregation was consolidated with that of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Then the parishes were consolidated to form St. Anselm Parish and a new St. Anselm Church was built in 1965.
