Scarborough, Ontario, was officially incorporated as a township on January 1st, 1850, as a borough on January 1st, 1967, as a city in June of 1983, and was officially amalgamated into the City of Toronto on January 1st, 1998. Scarborough was named by Elizabeth Simcoe – the wife of John Graves Simcoe, who was the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada. She named the region after England's Scarborough, located in North Yorkshire. Surveyed in 1791 settled in 1783. Left York County and joined Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.
On January 1, 1974, the part of Pickering Township, Ontario County west of the Rouge River (West Rouge and Port Union) was transferred to the Borough of Scarborough in the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. For events in Pickering Township before January 1, 1974, see Ontario County, Ontario.
