Miramichi was a Mi'kmaq and Acadian name for the region around Miramichi Bay and the mouth of the Miramichi River. It was home to the Mi'kmaq First Nation, an Acadian fort and trading post. It was briefly the name for the English settlement that was formally called Newcastle.

In 1995, the city of Miramichi was formed through the amalgamation of two towns, Newcastle and Chatham, with several smaller communities (Douglastown, Loggieville, Nelson-Miramichi, South Nelson, Chatham Head, Nordin, Moorefield, Russellville, Bushville) and portions of Chatham Parish, Glenelg Parish and Nelson Parish
