Ontario incorporated Kanata as a city in 1978 out of the Township of March, and portions of the Township of Goulburn and the Township of Nepean. In 1978 the Township of March and parts of Goulbourn and Nepean Townships became the City of Kanata. In 2001 it became part of the new City of Ottawa.
