Benjamin Eby arrived in Upper Canada from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1806 and purchased a large tract of land consisting of much of what would become the village of Berlin. The settlement was initially called Ebytown and changed to Berlin in 1833. in 1853 Berlin became the County Seat of the newly created County of Waterloo, elevating it to the status of Village. On 9 June 1912, Berlin was designated a city. The name was changed to Kitchener in 1916.
