The earliest mention of the name de Acclum is in the Will of Wren de Acclum. Lord of the Manor of Acclum (Acklam) in what is now Middlesbrough. Through the Middle Ages the name is found in Wills, Deeds and Grants of Warren moving down the Yorkshire coast. The notion that the name was used only by gentry is neither proved nor disproved by these documents. Hardly any documents of this period name ordinary people. There is another village called Acklam near Malton but we find no Acklams clearly associated with it.
