The 31st Australian Infantry Battalion was raised as part of the 8th Brigade at Enoggera, on the outskirts of Brisbane, in August 1915. The 8th Brigade joined the newly raised 5th Australian Division in Egypt, and proceeded to France, destined for the Western Front, in June 1916. The 31st Battalion fought its first major battle at Fromelles on 19th July 1916. It disbanded in France on 21st March 1919. The battalion had four commanding officers: Frederick William Toll, Charles Stewart Davies, John McArthur, and Neil Mackenzie Freeman.
Members of the battalion were awarded: one Victoria Cross (VC); one Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), one bar; two Officers of the order of the British Empire (OBE); twenty Military Crosses (MC), two bars; one AlbM; eleven Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCM); 68 Military Medals (MM), eight bars, one 2nd bar; four Meritorious Service Medals (MSM); six foreign awards.
