Charles was born at Newton Woods, Alton and one of 6 children to William Cate, labourer and Jane Baker.
He arrived in New Zealand with his family on the ship 'Bolton' leaving Gravesend, October 29, 1841 and arriving in Nelson March 15 1842.
Charles took up mining as an occupation. In 1853, he married Sarah Hunter at her family home in Waimea. Thirteen children were to be born in the marriage.
Charles passed away age 73 and is buried in the East Takaka Cemetery. BLK C PLOT 4.
