Biography

Luisa "Luisina" Castro, daughter of Calogero Castro and Rosalia Lombardo, is born on 14 Jan 1891 in San Cipirello.[1] Her baptismal record has not been found in either the Corleone or Monreale records. Cascio-10 14:58, 11 November 2015 (EST)

About 1916 in Sicily, she marries her first cousin Angelo di Carlo.[1]

Her birth year and place are confirmed in the manifest of alien passengers of the S.S. Conte Grande, sailing from Naples 31 August 1929. She is 38, a married housewife. I do not see any relatives traveling with her.[2]

According to at least two sources, while in New York, Luisa's husband serves in both the US Marines and in the American Cosa Nostra.[3]

Angelo's godson and nephew writes "At one point Uncle Angelo and his wife aunt Luisina shared our home in the Bronx."

In the 1940 federal census, taken 8 April, Giovanni Di Carlo, age 52, a "bass plasterer" in the "building line" heads a household at 3256 Bansen Ave in the Bronx. He and his wife, Antonina, age 41, were both born in Italy. He is a naturalized citizen. Their children at home are Mary, 10,[4]

Vincenzo, age 9, and Caterina, 7, all born in New York. Also living with Giovanni's family are his brother, Angelo Di Carlo, 49, and sister-in-law Luisia, 49, both born in Italy. They lived in Palermo in 1935. Angelo is a film salesman in the movie industry.[5]

In the very early morning of 8 December 1941, the night after Pearl Harbor was attacked, Angelo and three of his brothers are arrested as enemy aliens. At this time, he owns six movie theaters in New York City. All of his assets are sequestered. According to his nephew, Angelo's brothers are released after several months, but Angelo is detained for the entire war in Prisoner of War (POW) camps at Fort Meade in Maryland, Fort Sill in Oklahoma and Fort Missoula in Montana, where he works as a butcher. He is released after the war. He is never compensated for his sequestered assets.[1]

Luisa and Angelo have no children.[1]

After World War II, Luisa and her husband, "Capitano" Angelo (he is a captain in the Italian army), return to Sicily from New York. The timing of this move is after a minor heart attack, in 1958, according to Angelo's godson.[1]

Angelo dies on 12 November 1967 in Turi, Italy.[1]

Luisina dies on 24 Jul 1985 in Palermo, Italy.[1]
