Biography

Salvatore Castro, son of Leoluca Castro and Ursula Trombaturi, is born and baptized on 6 February 1881 in Corleone as Salvatorem. His godfather is his maternal uncle, the unmarried Carmelo Trombaturi.[1]

Salvatore's older half-brothers, his mother's sons, are Carlo (b. 1875) and Joseph Piranio (b. 1878), who found the Dallas Mafia in the 1920s.

Bill Feather's Mafia website calls Salvatore "Silvestre", aka Sam Castro, b. 1881 in Corleone, d. 1952. Feather writes that Castro may be of some relation to the Piranio brothers, and is a soldier in the 1920-50s in San Francisco.[2]

On the SS Lombardia departing Napoli and arriving in the port of New York on 14 January 1902:

22. Simone Majuri, 31 (b. 1871), married, countryman, last resided in Corleone, going to Galveston, Tex., joining nephew Calogero Piraino 1301 ?

23. Salvatore Castro, 20 (b. 1882), single, joiner, last resided in Corleone, going to Galveston, Tex., joining the same person, his brother [3]

Orsola Trumbatore is Simone's half-sister. Her son, Calogero Piranio, is the Mafia boss of Dallas, Texas by the 1920s. Salvatore Castro is Calogero Piranio's half brother, from his mother's first marriage.

Sam marries Bennie Mirindino around 1904. They have two known children, Lucille (1905) and Pearl R./Rosie (1907).

Lucille is born 6 September 1905 in Texas, according to an indexed record of her death.[4]

Pearl Rose is born 24 July 1907 in Texas, according to an indexed record of her death.[5]

Salvadore Castro, age 29 years, declares his intention to naturalize in the District Court of Dallas County, p. 57, on 10 January 1908. Petition filed 25 January 1910, vol. 1., p. 14.

Wife is Beng Merendino Castro, she lives at 213 N. Akard St., Dallas, TX. Minor children are Lucilla Castro, 4 yrs, and Rosey Castro, 2 yrs, both at Dallas, TX.

Date of order: 31 May 1910. Vol. 1. p. 14. Salvadore Castro signs his name.[6]

In the 1910 federal census of Dallas, Texas, taken 15 April, Sam Castro, 27 (b. 1882), heads a household at 213 N. Akard with his wife of six years, Bennie, 23 (b. 1887), and daughters Lucile, 5 (b. 1905), and Rosie, 3 (b. 1907). Bennie has had 2 children, both living. Sam and Bennie were born in Italy and their children in Texas. Sam emigrated in 1902 and Bennie in 1892. Sam is proprietor of a grocery store.[7]

Salvadore Castro, age 29 (b. 1881), residing at 213 N. Akard St., Dallas, formerly Italian national, issued a certificate of naturalization on 31 May 1910.[8]

Salvador Castro registers for the draft for WWI on 12 September 1918. He lives at 601 Exposition, Dallas, Dallas, TX. He is 37 years old, born 6 February 1881. White, naturalized citizen, unemployed grocer. Nearest relative is Bennie Castro at the same address. He signs his own name. Salvador is of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair.[9]

In the 1920 federal census of Los Angeles, Sam Castro, 38 (b. 1882), heads a household at 3913 Central Ave with his wife Bennie, 31 (b. 1889), and their daughters Lucile, 14 (b. 1906), and Pearl, 12 (b. 1908). Sam and Bennie were born in Italy. They were naturalized in 1905. Sam emigrated in 1902 and Bennie in 1892. Their daughters were born in Texas. Sam owns a grocery store.[10]

Lucille marries Antonio di Tommaso on 27 December 1929 in Los Angeles.[11]

In the 1930 federal census of Los Angeles, taken 14 April, Sam Castro, 49 (b. 1881), heads a household at 3915 Central Av. with his wife, Bennie, 43 (b. 1887), and daughter, Pearl, 21 (b. 1909). He owns his home. Sam and Bennie married when they were 23 and 17 (m. 1904), respectively. They were born in Italy and Pearl in Texas. Sam, an auto salesman, emigrated in 1901. His wife Bennie came in 1892. They are naturalized citizens.[12]

Pearl marries Richard Miele on 5 October 1930 in Los Angeles.[13]

In the 1940 federal census of Los Angeles, taken 12 April, Samuel Castro, 59 (b. 1881), heads a household at 324 W. 73rd St with his wife Betty, 51 (b. 1888). He owns his home, worth $2800. Both born in Italy. No occupations listed.[14]

Sam Castro registers for the draft for WWII on 25 April 1942 in Los Angeles. He lives at 324 W. 73rd St., Los Angeles, CA. He is 61, born in Corleone, Italy on 6 February 1881. His nearest contact is his daughter, Pearl Miele, at 83rd and Broadway in Los Angeles. Sam is not working. He is 5’8” and 173# with black eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.[15]

Death of Sam

Sam Trompatore Castro, born 6 February 1881, dies 27 December 1952 in Los Angeles.[16]

Lucille dies in Ventura, CA on 5 January 1982.[4]

Pearl dies in San Diego, CA on 23 August 1993.[5]
