Alfred L. Castle was born in this city March 2, 1875, and is a son of Mr. Chauncey H. Castle. After leaving the public schools he attended the Western Military Academy at Alton, holding every office in the academy service from corporal to first lieutenant and graduating at brevet second lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard. He went into Company F of this city in 1894 as second sergeant and sergeant major of the battalion. In April, 1897, he was elected first lieutenant and adjutant of the second battalion. When the Cuban war broke out he went into the service as battalion adjutant of the second battalion. Fifth Regiment, which position he held until the regiment was mustered out of service. Early in the war it was generally believed that additional troops would be required and Adjutant Castle recruited a full battalion of four companies ready for service, but fortunately they were not needed.
The son of a brave soldier, he is full of loyalty and patriotism and is an exceptionally good commanding officer. He is a fine horseman and his courage has never been questioned. Adjutant Castle became identified with the Comstock-Castle Stove Company in 1894 and now represents the company on the road in the south and west.[1]
