Biography

This profile is part of the Casteel Name Study.

On 7 January 1827, Elijah married Anna Calhoun at Randolph, Indiana.[1]

In the 1830 census, Elijah was living at Liberty Township, Delaware County, IN.[2] Liberty Township was established in 1825.[3]

At this time the people were commonly divided into three settlements known as the Dillingham, in the eastern part, Zane, in the central, and Salt Creek in the western. The people of the Dillingham settlement were more closely connected with those in Jackson Township. A mill and distillery having been erected on Coffee Creek by Casteel and Blayloch, they had the best of facilities for supplying themselves with aqua vitae and the "staff of life." Previous to the erection of the distillery, John Dillingham, who usually sheltered the "wayfaring" men that reached the settlement, dealt out the former article in quantities of not less than a quart. He, of course, unlike the "moonshiners" of the Alleghanies, paid a "government license."[4] Elijah Casteel's mill on Coffee Creek was in the Portersville area (Valparaiso). [5]

One of the first weddings in the area was the marriage of William Hughart to Elizabeth Zane on June 14, 1836, by Elijah Casteel, Justice of the Peace. [6]

Census

At the 1850 census, Elijah and his family were living at District 96, Sullivan, Missouri. [7] The household included:

Elijah Casteel, Head, 48 years, born Virginia, Farmer
Anna Casteel, Wife, 58 years (error?), born Ohio, Cannot Read or Write
Mila Ann Casteel, 22 years, born Indiana, Cannot Read or Write - crossed out
Nancy Casteel, 20 years, born Indiana, Cannot Read or Write
Milton Casteel, 18 years, born Indiana
James A. Casteel, 12 years, born Indiana
James L. Kilbury, 5 years, born Missouri
Martha Kilbury, 3 years, born Missouri

In 1860, he was still living in Sullivan, near the West Locust Post Office. [8]

Elijah is 58
Anna is now 57 years
James A. Kilbury, 16 years, Farmhand
Martha Kilbury, 14 years
Jane Kilbury, 81 years, born Pennsylvania, Domestic.
NOTE: On 28 January 1819 in Madison County, Ohio, Jane Calhoon married Richard Kilberry. On the 1830 census for Hopewell, Licking, Ohio, there is a Jane Calhoun. On the 1850 census, Jane Kilbury is living with Meredith Blalock (see NOTE below for Meredith Blalock.).

Occupation

On 4 August 1845, Elijah was appointed as Overseer of Roads for District 5 at Sullivan County, Missouri.[9] In 1850, Elijah is listed as a farmer.[10] At the 1860 census, he is a farmer and merchant.[11]

In 1863 and again in 1865, Elijah was appointed Postmaster of the Valparaiso Post Office in Sullivan County, Missouri.[12]

Military

He enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery. Rank, Private [13]

Death

Elijah died between 1865 and 1870 at Sullivan, Missouri.

Note

Meredith Blalock migrated every time that Elijah Casteel did so & always neighbored. He married Mary Calhoon, who I now believe is the sister of Elijah's wife, Anna Calhoun. Elijah's great-granddaughter Nancy Arvilla Bowles, married a Blalock.

Jane Kilbury 81 years, is recorded in the 1860 Census as a Domestic and living with the household of Elijah Casteel. In the 1850 Census, she was residing at the household of Meredith Blalock, neighbor of the Casteel Family. She is probably the mother of Mary and Anna Calhoun. In the 1830 census, she is Jane Calhoun.

Mila Ann Casteel, 22 years, born Indiana, Cannot Read or Write - crossed out in the 1850 census. This is believed to be Elijah's son William, listed in his own household with a 16 year old wife, in the 1850 census.
