Bronze Star

For meritorious conduct as Commander Officer of a U.S. Naval vessel during operations against enemy held islands in the Southwest Pacific Area, From 1 December 1944 - 8 March 1945, when his conduct during enemy air attacks and whirl in command of an escort for numerous convoys in the combat area, distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

Obituary

WILLIAM FREDERICK CASS, CAPTAIN USCG (Ret.) Captain William Frederick Cass, USCG (Ret.), of Bethesda, MD, died at age 93 on August 16, 2007. Born in Akron, OH in 1914, he graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1937. While at the Academy, he played football, basketball and baseball and was an early inductee into the USCGA Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended the National War College and received a Master's Degree in International Relations from the George Washington University.

He had a long and varied Coast Guard career. One of his initial assignments was aboard the USCGC Unalga, based in Puerto Rico, where he met his future wife, Pauline Abraham. during WWII, he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres and was awarded a Bronze Star as Commanding Officer of the USS Charlottesville following action in the Pacific. After the war, he served in various positions, including Commanding Officer of the USCGC Castle Rock, Coast Guard liaison to the Office of Chief of Naval Operations, Captain of the Port of Los Angeles, and Chief of Staff of Coast Guard operations in Miami.

Following his retirement from the Coast Guard in 1967, he worked as a program manager in the Secretary's Office of the Department of Transportation for 13 years. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Polly. His survivors include two sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Columba's Church, 4201 Albemarle St., NW, on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 11 a.m. Published in The Washington Post from Aug. 18 to Aug. 19, 2007.
