Born in 1906 Vida Lillian Case was the 3rd of 7 children born to Wilson and Bertha (Hyde) Case on the family farm in Bedford Township, Calhoun County, MI. Vida as well each of her siblings walked a mile to the country Court School which went through the 8th grade after which students were considered prepared to face life’s responsibilities. Her mother struggled with an extended health issue for several weeks at the time of Beatrice her youngest child’s birth when Vida was 18. Being the eldest daughter, she took on the homemaking responsibilities for the family in such an impressive manner that the Doctor asked her to work as a housekeeper for him for some time after her mother returned to good health.
Vida’s family travelled 2 miles by horse and buggy to attend a small country church. There she became acquainted with a young man whose family had an automobile. Soon she was being taken to church by her new friend Charles Cary. In March of 1929, just before the great depression hit the nation, Vida and Charles were married and moved into an apartment that had been arranged in Charles’ parent’s farm home. Vida was a good farmer’s wife as they carefully managed their finances to survive the depression on the farm while starting a family. She was known to chew paraffin wax to avoid spending money to quell her wish for gum. Their family consisted of 2 sons, Norman and Albert, leaving her longtime desire for a daughter to be deferred until her sons married her new daughters-in-law.
Their family was committed to their Faith in God regularly attending and holding numerous responsibilities in their churches over the years.
Vida enjoyed the rare opportunities to break away from the family responsibilities for a picnic, fishing outing, camping trip, and later deer hunting trips to upper Michigan with her husband. It was Vida that shot and brought home a black bear during one of those trips. Later they spent portions of 40 winters in Florida. It was in Florida in 1996 during her 89th year that they were involved in a serious auto accident from which she did not survive. They had been married just 2 weeks short of 67 years.
