Biography

Bernardo Cascio is born 20 March 1859 in his parents' home in Corleone. His birth is reported by his father, Mercurio Cascio, age 35, villico (farmer). His mother is Benedetta Terrusa, age 30. He is baptized the same day. His godparents are Salvator Streva and Felicia Carrabba.

Marriage to Caterina Badami

Bernardo weds Caterina Badami on 13 November 1887 in Corleone. Caterina Badami is 18 years old and because both of her parents have passed away, petitions the family council for permission to marry. Bernardo's father has died by this time, and his mother is living.

Bernardo and Caterina have at least three children together: Benedetta (1888) and two sons named Mercurio (1890 and 1892), all named after Bernardo's parents.

Benedetta is born 29 September 1888 and baptized Benedictam the next day, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Joannes Baptista Salpietra and Carmela Nicoletti, son and mother. Called Benedetto, a boy, in the record of her death, she dies at one year and two months of age on 5 December 1889.

The first son named Mercurio is born 6 November 1890 and baptized 8 November as Mercurius. His godparents are Joannes Paternostro and Vincentia Picoraro, mother and son. He dies at a year and one month of age on 16 December 1891.

The second son named Mercurio is born 12 November 1892. He is baptized Mercurium on 13 November. His godparents are Antoninus Lo Vecchio and Bernarda Cammarata.

Marriage to Giuseppa Dino

When Bernardo weds Giuseppa Dino on 28 November 1893 (2 December in the Church), he is 34 years old; his father passed away sometime before 1884 (when his sister Maria weds), and his mother is living. Giuseppa Dino is 25, and also contadina, daughter of contadini and all residents of Corleone.

Bernardo's second son named Mercurio, from his first marriage, dies at a year and two months of age on 10 January 1894.

Bernardo and his second wife, Giuseppa, have at least two children, Leoluca (1895) and a second daughter named Benedetta (1898).

When Leoluca is born 23 June 1895, Bernardo is 35. He and his wife Giuseppa live at 45 via Triolo in Corleone. Witnesses on Leoluca's birth record are Francesco Listi, 47, and Giuseppe Sciortino, 27, both contadino. The father and witnesses would usually sign the birth record, but it seems they're analfabeti (illiterate).

Leoluca is baptized the day he is born, in San Martino parish, as Leonemlucam. His godparents are Antoninus and Joanna Dino, brother and sister.

On 25 March 1898 Benedetta is baptized Benedicta. Her godparents are Joseph Pecoraro and Leoluchina Pecoraro, his sister. She dies at one month and 23 days of age on 12 May 1898
