Biography

Antonina Cascio Gianarano is born around 1857 in Roccamena. According to the record of her marriage, she is the daughter of Vincenzo Cascio Gianarano, borgese (middle class), and Margherita Bruscia ^[1]. Other records indicate that Vincenzo Cascio of Roccamena is married to Rosalia Bruscia. However, that couple has a daughter named Antonina. Records for their daughter's marriage and children contradict the possibility that these two Antoninas are the same person. The double surname used in this Antonina's records may be for disambiguating these two families.

Antonina marries at age 15 to Domenico Birtone of Corleone. He is a 28 year old borgese from Corleone.

The couple have at least nine children, four whose names are known: Bernarda (c. 1877), Margherita (c. 1879), Rosalia (1896), and Biagio (1899).

Rosalia is born 19 June 1896 and baptized two days later. Her godparents are Michaelangelo Birtone and Emmanuela Cascio, a married couple.^[2]

Bernarda marries Leoluca Di Frisco in November 1897. A petition is included in the marriage documents, requesting a dispensation despite 3rd degree consanguinity, due to circumstances of poverty -- Bernarda has 8 other siblings, six of which are female, and does not have a dowry as a result.^[3]

Biagio is born 1 January 1899 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Luciano and Lucia Birtone, brother and sister.^[4]

Margherita marries Nicolo’ Mancuso on 18 June 1899.^[5]

Bernarda dies at the age of 26 on 28 August 1903. Her husband Leoluca survives her.^[6]
