Biography

Biagia Cascio is born 25 December 1846 in her parents' home in via San Giovan Battista, Corleone. She is the daughter of Leoluchina Lisotta, age 24 (b. 1822), and Leoluca Cascio, age 32 (b. 1814). Her birth is reported by the midwife, Francesca Paola de Luca, age 42.

Biagia is baptized the next day, named after her paternal grandmother, as is traditional for the first born daughter. Her godparents are Salvatore Marino and Lucia Ligotino, a married couple.

Biagia's father dies on 12 May 1853, when she is six years old.

Biagia (known as Blasia in church records) marries the borgese (middle class) Vincenzo Spatafora (sometimes spelled Spadafora) on 17 November 1867. They have six known children: three daughters named Leoluchina (1869, 1878, and 1881), Francesca Paola (1875), and two sons named Giuseppe (c. 1879 and 1884). Leoluchina and Giuseppe are Vincenzo's parents' names.

The first Leoluchina is born 8 February 1869 and baptized Leoluchinam the next day. She shares a name with both of her grandmothers. Her godparents are Salvator and Matthea Coniglio, brother and sister.

She dies on 20 July 1871 at two years and five months of age.

See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions. Leoluchina shares her name with both grandmothers.

Francesca Paola is born and baptized 25 October 1875. Her godparents are Biagio Oliveri and Maria Carmela Timpa, a married couple.

The second daughter named Leoluchina is born 22 August 1878 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Liborio Paternostro and Salvatrice Mangiameli, a married couple. She dies on 26 December 1878 at four months of age.

The first son named Giuseppe is presumed born in 1879 and dies in infancy. He dies on 18 December 1879.

The third daughter named Leoluchina is born and baptized on 25 May 1881. Her godmother is the unmarried Emmanuela Cascio. She dies at two years of age on 24 May 1883.

Vincenzo (Vincentio) and Biagia stand as godparents to Giovanna Cascio, baptized Joanna, the daughter of Hieronymo (Girolamo) Cascio and Maria Felicia Pecorino, on 2 September 1884.

Vincenzo and Biagia's son, Giuseppe, is born 28 September 1884 at 36 Via Lijatta, Corleone. Despite his class, the note on this birth record says that Vincenzo is illiterate.

When the second son named Giuseppe is born in 1884, his mother's age is not provided. I have estimated she is around 20 years old at the time; her husband is 45, so she may be quite a bit older.

Giuseppe is baptized 29 September as Josephum. His godparents are Pietro di Francesco and Eleonora Triolo.

Francesca Paola marries Giuseppe Badolato on 29 November 1894.

Vincenzo dies at age 57 (b. 7 Feb 1839) on 16 February 1896 at 8:30 pm. Biagia survives him.

Biagia dies a widow on 26 September 1905 at the age of 58.[1]

A margin note on his civil birth record indicates that Biagia and Vincenzo's youngest child, Giuseppe, marries Calogera Lo Bue in 1905 or 1906. He marries her on 1 July 1906. This record says that his father is living and his mother has died.
