Biography

Maria Caruso is an industriosa (manufacturer/trader) born 12 October 1858 in via. S. Nicolo', Corleone, the daughter of Rosa Vasi, age 24 (b. 1834), and Martino Caruso, age 30 (b. 1828), itogenataro (I cannot find a translation of his occupation).^[1]

A clue to Martino's occupation appears in the civil record of Maria's death. Where it would usually say that she was the daughter of [father] and [mother] and wife of [husband] it says she's "da Martinostagnoio... e da Rosa Vasi... moglie di Federico Paparcusi." A stagnaio is a plumber, and moglie is wife.

The first banns are posted in the marriage of Federico Paparcusi and Maria Caruso on 29 August 1880.^[2] They wed in church on 20 September 1880.^[3]

Maria Caruso dies at age 33 (b. 1848) on 9 October 1881. Both her parents and her husband survive her.^[4]

The civil record of her death accompanies the marriage records for Federico's 1882 marriage to Rosalia Gennusa. Her father in law Paolo Paparcuri, age 65, murifabbro, (brickmason) and Michelangelo Zabbia, age 39, becchino, (gravedigger) report her death in 45 via Calvario, Corleone, at age 32 on 20 October 1881.^[5]
