Gary Carter is Notable.

Gary Edmund Carter was a major league baseball catcher who played 19 seasons, primarily for the Montreal Expos and New York Mets.

He was born in Culver City, Los Angeles, California. His father, James Haggard Carter, was an aircraft worker. In 1966, when he was age 12, his mother Inge died of leukemia. Gary attended Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, Orange County, California.

He excelled at baseball and football. Although he signed a letter of intent to play football for the UCLA Bruins as quarterback in 1972, but signed with the Montreal Expos to play baseball after being selected in the third round of the draft.

Carter was converted to catcher in the Expos' minor league system. He was called up to the Expos in 1974. Ten years later, the Expos traded Carter to the Mets. He led the Mets to a World Championship in 1986.

He played for the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers before returning to the Expos for his final season in 1992.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 as an Expo, the year the Expos retired his number 8.

After retirement, Carter was a coach and manager for minor league teams.

He was married, with three children.

He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2011, and died 16 Feb 2012 in Florida.
