Biography

Euphrastus was born about 1799, supposedly in Tyringham, Berkshire, Massachusetts,^[1] but his birth is not recorded in the Vital Records.

"CARRIER, Euphrastus, of Penn. m. Harriet R. Buell of Colchester, Mar. 13, 1828, by Rev. Joseph Harvey.>^[2] Based on US Census and other records, they had at least the following children:

In 1850, Euphrastus Carrier, a 50 year old farmer, lived in Clover Township, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, with his wife Harriet, eight children, and Hannah Carrier, 77.^[3]

In 1860, Euphrastus lived in Clover Township, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, with his wife and seven other Carriers born in Pennsylvania. It appears that son David is living with his parents, along with his wife Sarah and child Amme.^[4]

In 1870, "Euphrasus" and "Hariet" Carrier, lived in Clover Township, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, with three children:^[5]

Euphrastus Carrier died on 17 Aug 1878 and is buried at the Carrier Cemetery, Summerville, Jefferson, Pennsylvania.^[6]

He signed his Will on 20 June 1878, and it was filed on 20 Aug 1878. His Will reads as follows:^[7]

Know all men by these presents, that I Euphrastus Carrier of the township of Clover, County of Jefferson, State of Pennsylvania, being in ill health but of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, whereby revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made I do dispose of my property in the following manner to wit: My will is that all my debts and funeral expenses shall be by my Executor hereafter mentioned, be paid out of my Estate as soon after my decease as shall by them be found convenient. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Harriet Carrier, my house, the part I now occupy, including a garden, during her life. I also bequeath to her the one fourth of what may be raised on my farm, on which I now reside, or the one fourth of the proceeds thereof. Also all my house hold and kitchen furniture, including all my money and stock, my debts of every description, except what is set off to the children.

Albert A. Carrier, my son, I will and bequeath you Eight Hundred Dollars, four Hundred in notes I hold against you, also Four Hundred Dollars I hold against I. C. Carrier for Warsaw timber lands.

Griswold B. Carrier my son, I will and bequeath to you Eight Hundred dollars in a note I hold against you.

David F. Carrier my son, I will and bequeath to you all the Notes and debts I hold against you.

Malinda M. Carrier my daughter I will and bequeath to you Twenty Dollars.

Francis L. Smullin my daughter I will and bequeath to you Twenty Dollars.

Landford C. Carrier and Milton H. Carrier my sons I will and bequeath to you my Farm on which I now reside.

Elizabeth Munger I will and bequeath to you two hundred dollars in a note I hold against G. B. Carrier.

I do nominate and appoint my son, Albert A. Carrier to be the Executor of this my last Will and Testament, whereof I the Ephrastus Carrier have subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 20th day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Seventy eight.
