Mary Elizabeth (Carrier) Whitehill was born on 19 Mar 1861 in Clarion, Pennsylvania, United States, daughter of David Foote Carrier (1833–1912) and Sarah Jane (Clark) Carrier (1839–1929).

Her siblings were:
