"David R. Carrier (1795-1880)
"Winfield. Colonel, War of 1812. Businessman. organized West Winfield Bank: postmaster,1825, state assemblyman, 1828, town supervisor, 1838-39, 1853-54. Gave land For West Winfield Academy (established 1850)."
At the age of 5 came to Plainfield, Otsego Co., NY with his father, where he attended school taught by Joseph Hawkins. Became a member of the family of Martin Luce at age of 12 and commenced work at his store in Litchfield.
"Carrier, Colonel David R., Winfield, was the first president of the First National Bank of West Winfield, and held that position until his death. He was the first postmaster of West Winfield, and also a merchant there. He married first Betsey Tompkins, who died May 5, 1860. His second wife is Hannah, daughter of Simeon Bucklen, one of the first settlers of this town. Mr. and Mrs. Carrier had two children, then eldest, Bessie A., who married H.T. Anthony, of Leonardsville, Madison county, and they have one son, Rae C.; the son, David R. Carrier, is in business in Chicago, Ill. Colonel David R. Carrier was born December 27, 1795, and died April 7, 1880."[1]
David Russell Carrier was drafted at Richfield, Otsego, New York, on 20 Dec 1814 as a private in Capt. William Palmer's company in the 27th Regiment of the NY Militia, commanded by Col. Christopher P. Bellinger. He was discharged on 12 Nov 1814 at Sacket's Harbor, Jefferson, New York. He died on 7 April 1880 at West Winfield. He was married to Betsey Tompkins and Hannah Bucklin. Betsey Ann Carrier died on 5 May 1860. His married to Hannah took place as Saratoga Springs, Saratoga, New York, on 8 Sept 1861. Hannah received a pension for David's service, and she was dropped from the rolls on 3 July 1895. His Bounty Land Claims were numbers 53-832-40-50 and 49-469-120-55.[2]

In 1850, David R. "Corrien," a 54 year old merchan b. New York, lived in Winfield with his wife Betsey A., 54 b. Connecticut, and Mary Fairchild, 11 b. NY.[4]
In 1855, David R. Carrier (indexed as David K.), a 59 year old farmer, lived in Winfield with his wife Betsy, two adopted children and a clerk.[5]
In 1860, D. R. "Crerer," a 64 year of "gentleman," lived in Winfield, Herkimer, New York.[6]
In 1870, David R. Carrier, President of the W.W.N. Bank, lived with his wife Hannah, two children, and a servant in West Winfield, Herkimer, New York.[7]
David died on 7 April 1880 in West Winfield. The Mortality Schedule shows that he died of "brain disease." (His parents were both born in Connecticut.)[8] He is buried at the West Winfield Cemetery, West Winfield, Herkimer, New York.[9]
