Biography

Francois was born in St Joseph-de-la-Pointe-Levy Lauzon, Levis Cty, Quebec, Canada, in 1832.^[1][2]

In 1853, Frank married Marie Adelaide Demers.^[3]

The 1881 Canada census shows 49 year old Francois and Adelaide farming in Quebec, with 9 children.^[4] The children ranged from 24 years old down to age 4, so the family would have helped with farm & domestic chores, and childcare. There were several other Carrier families recorded nearby, likely related.

The population growth of Quebec in the 19th century, and the growing scarcity of good farm land is likely what motivated the Carrier family to relocate to the United States. Frank & Adelaide crossed the border at Port Huron, Michigan, in April 1887, and quickly proceeded on to Wright county, Minnesota, where they lived, farmed, and built a community with other French-speaking ex-pats from Quebec. (according to the Paul Allan Fine book referenced below)

Frank became a naturalized citizen on 30 Oct 1890.

The 1895 Minnesota state census finds Frank and Adelaide in Maple Lake Village with 2 young ladies in the home.^[5] He was working as a carpenter, and helped build some of the homes in the area. The 2 young Carrier women are believed to be a sister and a daughter of Frank.

The 1900 US census shows 68 year old Francis living with his son Joseph's family in Buffalo, Minnesota.^[6] It was a busy household, with 10 people from 68 years down to an infant, including an in-law and 2 boarders.

The 1905 Minnesota state census recorded 74 year old Frank (and wife) living in his son's home, still claiming he's a "farmer".^[7]

He passed away in 1922.^[8][9][10]
