Biography

Mexican flag
Carmen Carrera was born in Mexico.

Carmen was most likely born about 1873 in Chihuahua, Mexico, although that is a loose estimate taken from mostly the 1900 census.[1]

Few records of her survive. She first appears on the 1900 census living with her husband Magdeleno Sierra, although she is cited there as his step-daughter, with their mutual children cited either as step-children or adopted.[2] These labels were disproven by later censuses and DNA tests taken by their descendents. As it was likely Carmen truly was his step-daughter due to sharing a surname with his first wife Arcadia Carrera, they probably initially lied to the census-taker about the nature of their relationship.

According to family lore, she stayed with him until about 1905, when she "ran away" with another man with the surname Romero, possibly back to Mexico.

No death records of her survive. Her grandchildren claim to have no personal memories of her as she supposedly "died young."

Ancestry

Despite how little is known about her, her granddaughter Carmen Sierra seemed to recall Carmen Carrera's ancestors being from Salamanca, Spain. [3]
