Paul Cardaropoli is born 25 January 1920 in Springfield, MA, the son of Giuseppe Cardaropoli and Lucia Leone of 21 Union St., Springfield. His father and mother are both 38 years old (b. 1881) and were born in Italy. His father is a laborer.[1]
Paul's parents are immigrants from Bracigliano, Italy. Giuseppe also appears as "Joseph Fred" Cardaropoli in some records.
In the 1930 federal census of Springfield, MA, taken 2 April, Joseph Cardaropoli heads a household at 21 Union St. He owns his home, worth $7600. Joseph, and his wife, Lucy, both 49 (b. 1881), were born in Italy, and married when they were 16 (m. 1897). Their children at home are Rose, 18 (b. 1912), Patsy (son), 15 (b. 1915), Fred, 13 (b. 1917), and Paul, 10 (b. 1920), all born in MA. Joseph immigrated in 1906 and his wife in 1907. He is a bread maker in a bakery.[2]
Paul, whose nickname is "The Penman," is a sports bookie in partnership with Frankie "Skyball" Scibelli.[3]
On 24 September 1959, the Springfield Union reports that two Springfield "sportsmen" were fined, Frank “Skyball” Scibelli, 45 (b. 1914), and Paul Cardaropoli, 40 (b. 1919).
On 29 September 1961, the Springfield Union reports that Scibelli and Cardaropoli are arrested. The next day, they report that the two, arrested at Our Lady of Providence Hospital, in Holyoke, are "Frank (Skyball) Scibelli, 48 (b. 1913), of 211 Williams St. and Paul (The Penman) Cardaropoli, 42 (b. 1919), of 17 Hubbard Ave., both Springfield."
In November, the Springfield Union reports the prosecution in local district court of Paul Cardaropoli, 42 (b. 1919), of 57 Hubbard Ave. and Frank Scibelli, 48 (b. 1913), of 211 William St., both of Springfield, who are charged with registering horse bets. (3 November 1961.)
The above article gives Paul's address at 57 Hubbard, but articles published before and after this report his address is at 17 Hubbard.
On 4 November 1961, the Springfield Union reports: “Arraigned before Judge Nolen were Frank Scibelli, 48, of 211 William St., Springfield, and Paul J. Cardaropoli, 42, of 17 Hubbard Ave., Springfield.”
On 26 November 1961, the Springfield Union reports: “The bookies continue to do business. Not as usual, though. Item: The arrest of Frank (Skyball) Scibelli and Paul (The Penman) Cardaropoli, both of this city, in telephone booths in our Lady of Providence Hospital, Holyoke.”
On 20 May 1964, the Springfield Union reports that Frank “Skyball” Scibelli, 51 (b. 1913), of 211 William St.; and Paul Cardaropoli, 44 (b. 1920)," are among those charged with disturbing the peace. An article in 1968 reports on this arrest, and the resulting Superior Court case, naming "Paul (The Penman) J. Cardaropoli, 47 (b. 1921), of 1657 Main St.”
Paul J. Cardaropoli marries Elaine J. Cianchini on 20 August 1970 in Enfield, CT. They are married by a Roman Catholic priest. Paul is 51 (b. 1919) and Elaine is 35 (b. 1935).[4]
Paul dies 30 March 2004 at age 84. His last residence is in Agawam.[5] Paul's wife, Elaine, survives him. His obituary names three sons---Joseph Cardaropoli and his wife, Martha of Ludlow; Paul J. Cardaropoli , Jr. and his wife, Joanne of Williamsburg, VA; and Paul Cianchini of Littleton, CO---and two daughters, Debra Tierney and her husband, William of Feeding Hills; and Paula Carra and her husband, Ronnie of Somers, CT.[6] Paul is buried in Saint Michaels Cemetery in Springfield.[7]
