Martha was born on 15 Dec 1819, the daughter of Samuel Capper and Elizabeth.^[1] She was born in Potterne, Wiltshire.^[2] Her birth was recorded by Wiltshire Quaker Monthly Meeting.^[3]

At the time of the 1841 census, Martha lived at St Nicholas, Bristol, Gloucestershire with her parents two brothers and a servant:^[4]
