New Zealand screenwriter, producer, and director based in Australia. Campion is the second of four women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and is also the first female filmmaker in history to receive the Palme d'Or, which she received for directing the acclaimed film The Piano (1993), for which she also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.[2]
She has received 2 Academy Awards, 2 BAFTA Awards, and 2 Golden Globe Awards for her critically acclaimed films, The Piano (1993), and The Power of the Dog (2021). She was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) in the 2016 New Year Honours, for services to film.
As a ground-breaking female director she is currently the only woman to be nominated twice for Academy Award for Best Director (1 win). Also she is the first female filmmaker to receive the Palme d'Or for The Piano (1993) which also won her the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay making her the first woman to win Academy Awards for both directing and screenwriting. She is the first woman to win Academy Awards for both directing and screenwriting when she won Best Director for The Power of the Dog (2021) at the 94th Academy Awards. The same happened at the 78th Venice International Film Festival when she won the Silver Lion award and she is only the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for Feature Film.
Other films she directed include An Angel at My Table (1990), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Holy Smoke! (1998), and Bright Star (2009) and she co-created the television series Top of the Lake (2013).
