James was born around 1806 in South Carolina. He was born in Abbeville, as confirmed by the death record of his son James Martin Campbell.[1] He was the son of James Campbell III (abt.1783-1860) and an unknown mother. (Some online genealogical records say his mother was named Elizabeth, but offer no sources.)
He was shown in Anderson in the 1840 census, with a household and nine slaves.[2] The 1850 census shows him in Abbeville with wife Dicy, William, James, Ann, John and Elijah.[3] The 1860 census shows him in Abbeville with his wife Dicy and children William, Martin, John, Elijah and Anna.[4] He was still in Abbeville in the 1870 census.[5]
His death record or estate documents have not been found. Since his name did not appear in the 1880 census, and given the fact that he had lived his life in the same location, it might be assumed that he died after 1870.
