Biography

Scottish flag
Henry Campbell was born in Scotland.
Henry Campbell is a member of Clan Campbell.

There is conflicting information on Henry's birth. On the 1851 and 1861 Census, he claims to be born in Ireland and yet on his son, Peter's birth register on the 24 Mar 1855, he says he was born in Campbelton, Argyll, which is where his wife Catherine was born.[1]

Henry Campbell married Catherine Nowland / Newlands on 26 Dec 1845 in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland.[2]

Their children included the following, baptized in Roman Catholic Church in Rothesay, Bute, unless specified differently:

  1. George, b 1846 in Greenock, St Mary's[3]
  2. James, b 1849
  3. Henry, b 1851,[4] d 1864[5]
  4. John, b 1853,[6] d 1878[7]
  5. Peter, b 1855[8]
  6. Edward, b 1857,[9] d 1859[10]
  7. Elizabeth, b 1859[11]
  8. Archibald, b 1862[12][13]

Henry was enumerated in the 1851 Scotland Census as living with the Crelly family in Rothesay; He is a plasterer's labourer aged 28 years, born in Ireland, living with wife Catherine and two sons, George, aged 4 and James aged 2[14]

He was enumerated again in 1861 still living in Rothesay with wife Catherine and now five children. He is now a fisherman, aged 35 born in Ireland. [15]

On death of son Henry in 1864, Henry Sr. is described as father, deceased.[5]

Research Notes

No death register could be found in either the Statutory Death Registers or the Roman Catholic Church registers. Died at sea?

According to Family Search, a Roman Catholic church was formed in 1816 and dedicated in 1850 in Campbelton. No records are known to survive before 1879. Presumably earlier records were kept but lost. [16]
