James Campbell was the Mayor of Toowoomba in 1882, and the MLA for Aubigny in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 4 March 1884 to 29 April 1893. He owned a Cattle property at 'Dulacca West' & was an accomplished Cattleman. Campbell Street Toowoomba is named after James & his brother Charles.
James was born at Cooks River, NSW, in 1838. He was the son of Hugh Campbell and Helen Fraser.
James and his brothers Charles and William had the Butchery & Wool Scouring Business on the corner of Ruthven & Russell St. where later on the Commonwealth Bank was built there. The 3 were in partnership & traded as 'J.C.& W Campbell' (James, Charles & William). When they first arrived in the area they were connected with the 'Eton Vale Station.'
James & Charles were foundation members of the Toowoomba Caledonian Society which is still there today.
James married Sarah Ann Lovell 17th April 1866 in Toowoomba & they had 12 children. James called their home "Portland" after the Ship that brought the family to Australia in 1837. James father Hugh Campbell moved to Toowoomba after his wife Ellen died in Sydney. Hugh & his Son Charles are buried in the Drayton Cemetery & James & Sarah are in the Toowong Cemetery.[1]
