Biography

John (Cameron) VIII Captain of Clan Cameron is a member of Clan Cameron.

John was the son of John Cameron.[1]

Supposed to have led the clan at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333[2][3]

In the History of the Camerons Alexander MacKenzie states that John:

Also known as “John Ochtery”. He joined David II with a considerable body of his followers, whom he commanded in the third Division of the Scots army, at the battle of Hallidon Hill, on the 15th of July, 1333. He continued in the king’s service until the English were expelled from the kingdom, and the king firmly settled in the government of Scotland. "

His wife is thought to have been Elaine Mowat [4] but few details appear to exist to confirm this. According to the MacFarlane Clan and Families Genealogy website his children were:

  1. Allan Cameron, 9th Chief
  2. Janet Cameron

I believe this man has been incorrectly attached to a different family where both father and son were named John Cameron. His dated don't fit with either.
Thanks Kathy. The project will be looking carefully at it when we start reviewing these Arbroath profiles, but if you want to take a crack at it before then please do so. Any assistance is appreciated.

His listed birth is 5 years before his alleged father was born. Perhaps ???? there is an error.
