Biography

Allan Cameron, 5th of Glendessary and Acharm was the son of Allan of Glendessary and Christian Cameron, daughter of Sir Ewen Cameron of Locheil by his wife Jean, who in turn was daughter of Colonel David Barclay, XVHth of Urie.[1] His wife was Sibella MacLean, daughter of Hector MacLean, 12th of Coll and Janet Mary Campbell.[2]

Among their children were:

  1. Catherine Cameron (died 10 Feb 1802)[2]
Allan Cameron of Glendessary was appointed Captain in the 77th, Montgomery's Highlanders, 22 Jan 1757... Captain Cameron's connection with the regiment terminated in 1760 and his membership in [Saint Andrew's Society of the state of New York] was coincident with his coming to New York to take ship for Scotland, this latter fact furnishing the clue to his identity.[1]

It appears that after his cousin, Alexander Cameron of Dungallon died 3 Aug 1759, Allan returned to Scotland from South Carolina by way of New York. 18 May 1763, he was named as heir of John Cameron, 2nd of Glendessary (his grandfather), since his brother John, 4th of Glendessary had died previously without issue.[1]

Allan may have lived in Edinburgh in 1770 and also was reported as living at the time of his sister, Jean's funeral, Jun 1772.[1]

Research Notes

  • The additional children are forcing a later death date. Proofs for those children need to be reviewed. The MacBean (1922) text implies that Allan may have remained in Scotland once he returned, but this is inconclusive.
  • Based upon the MacBean (1922) text, consider adding US Southern Colonist Sticker / South Carolina, although this scenario is unique in that Allan was present on a military detail in South Carolina, but left circa 1760.

His death date has been adjusted to allow for him being the father of the children who are attached. Please cross-validate if paternity is uncertain.
