Alfred Cameron Junior was a Ngarrindjerri man. [2] The lands and waters of the Coorong region have been Country to the traditional custodians, the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people for thousands of years.[3]

His father Alfred Cameron Senior held the title to part of the families traditional lands near Meningie in South Australia. Alfred Cameron Junior worked on his families land fishing, breaking horses and shearing.[4] The lands and waters of the Coorong region have been country to the traditional custodians, the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people for thousands of years.[5]

Alfred enlisted in the first World War to serve his country on the 15th January 1915. He joined the 3rd Light horse Regiment of the 1st Light Horse Brigade as a private at Gallipoli in November of that year.[6] Exact numbers of Aboriginal men who fought at Gallipoli are unknown but are estimated to be about 70.[7] In 1917 Alfred was transferred to the 1st Australian Machine Gun Squadron.[8] Each Light Horse Brigade commanded a Machine Gun Squadron which provided support for the Brigade with the use of Vickers machine guns. This was particularly important in the Egypt and Palestine campaigns which took place over 1916-1918.[9] Alfred was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914-1915 Star.[10]

Alfred was discharged from the AIF on 26 August 1919 and returned to the family farms after the war.[11] He passed away in 1949 at Meningie in South Australia.[12]
