"Cab" Calloway was an American jazz singer, songwriter, dancer, bandleader, conductor, fashion influencer, and actor. He was a wildly popular regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York City.[1]
From Wikipedia:
He had several hits in the 1930s–1940s, becoming known as the "Hi-de-ho man" for his most famous song, "Minnie the Moocher," recorded in 1931.... He also made several stage, film, and television appearances until his death in 1994 at the age of 86.... He was the first African American musician to sell a million records from a single song and to have a nationally syndicated radio show.... He is in the Grammy Hall of Fame and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.... He influenced later singers such as Michael Jackson and various hip-hop performers.[1]
In the Youtube video below, "Betty Boop as Minnie the Moocher," Cab Calloway, wearing a "zoot suit," does an early version of the Moonwalk that was perfected by Michael Jackson.
Cabell Calloway III was born in Rochester, New York, on 25 December 1907. His mother, Martha Eulalia Reed, was a teacher and church organist, and his father, Cabell Calloway Jr., was a lawyer.[1][2]
The family moved to Maryland, and he grew up in the Druid Hill neighborhood of West Baltimore. His father died about 1913 and his mother married John Nelson Fortune about 1915.[1][3]
He credited his older sister, vocalist and big band leader Blanche Calloway, as his model and guide into a show business career that spanned 65 years. That career began in nightclubs of Chicago after his days spent at Crane College.
He had five children, all daughters. With fellow student Zelma Proctor, he had one daughter, Camay Calloway in 1927.[1]
He died in Hockessin, New Castle, Delaware, USA in 1994,[6]
and was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, Westchester County, New York.[7]

This month's WikiTree News showed Connections from 10 Harlem Rennaissance greats but allowed me to find out that not only do i have 22 degree of connection from Cab Calloway that my cousins and i are likely 14th cousins 6x removed.
This part of the family obviously goes back a long way to England with some very interesting British noble families involved. I am hoping to do some personal research on this new branch of the family. anyone with info or who just want to share anything, contact me anytime! I do know that some of my ancestors allow me to join the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames and perhaps would help you with this too should you want to.
it is really nice to have family KNOWN that traces so far back in History.
Hi there profile managers! We plan on featuring Cab alongside Romare Bearden and other participants in the Harlem Renaissance in the Connection finder on September 2. Between now and then is a good time to take a look at the sources and biography to see if there are updates and improvements that need made, especially those that will bring it up to WikiTree Style Guide standards. A Team member will check on the profile closer to the week we'll feature it and make changes as necessary.
Featured Eurovision connections:
