Find A Grave Biography

  • Francis Marion Callicotte was just 18, and living in Hawleyville, Page Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. A of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Aug 27, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861.

Callicotte became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 12, 1863, along with most of his company. During his term of service, he was promoted to 7th Corporal on Jan 1, 1864; to 5th Corporal on Jan 1, 1865; to 4th Corporal on March 1, 1865; and finally to 3rd Corporal (Musician) on June 1, 1865.

Callicotte mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta with his company. Serving under Colonel McCook, and Col. Benjamin Harrison, The From a narrative of the Battle of Atlanta; “ The Eighteenth Indiana Battery, The Fifth and Eighth Iowa Calvary, Second Kentucky Clavary, were moved to cross the Chatahoochee along with the First Wisconsin Calvary, with a pontoon train to recross the river To Fayetteville Ga. into Campbellton, Ga. They eventually came out of the woods in the town of Palmetto, on the West Point Railroad some ten or twelve miles away. and after dark burnt the town, burning all the Rebel stores. Taking about three hundred prisoners, quartermasters, paymasters, commissaries.

Callicotte moved to Multnomah County, Oregon where the family had settled.
