In the 1930 federal census of New York City’s 18th Assembly District, taken 4 April, Mary Callace, 65 (b. 1865), a widow, heads a household at 229 E. 107th St. with her son, Frank, 30 (b. 1900), single. They were both born in Italy and emigrated in 1907. Frank is a violinist, teaching at home.

The households to either side are at the same address, and are headed by men named “Mione.” One of them, Angelo Mione, is Mary’s son in law.[5]

By 1937 Frank is involved with Sam Cavalieri in a nationwide narcotics smuggling ring. He is arrested in 1940 and released for lack of evidence.[4]
