Charles Lawrence Calkins (Larry) was born in Clarkston, Washington and moved to the Seattle Area when he was two years old. He was raised in Kenmore, Washington and graduated from Inglemoor High School. He attended Washington State University in Pullman, WA for four and a half years and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. He met his spouse, Judy Heavey, in Pullman and they married August 19, 1972 in Darrington, WA. The first major job was with Burlington Northern and their Timber and Lands Division where he was an assistant Forester between 1974 and 1978 where he was responsible for tree planting activities on cutover lands out of Roslyn WA. His oldest Daughter was born on July 15, 1974 in Denver Colorado, and his son was born on August 10, 1976 in Ellensburg, WA. He and his family moved to Pendleton, OR to work for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in 1978. His youngest daughter was born on March 21, 1981 in Walla Walla, WA. He continued to work for the Tribes until 1988. At that time he switched jobs and began to work for the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in Pendleton. The family moved to Bend in 1996, then to The Dalles in 2002 and then to Umatilla in 2005. He finished his career at DEQ in 2016 and retired in Gilbert, AZ where he lives with his spouse today.
